Believing in our Youth - Investing Where it Matters Most

There are some national organizations that have told our gay youth they are unwelcome, asserting gay youth do not meet their leadership or membership standards. Join with us as we tell our youth they EXCEED those standards and that we are proud of them. A little friendly support and encouragement goes a long way for students who often face personal hardship and rejection due to their sexual orientation.

GLBA currently maintains four scholarship endowment funds:

  1. The Carl Joseph Adelhardt Memorial Scholarship Endowment
This is GLBA’s NEWEST SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT created April 3, 2005. Mr. Adelhardt passed away April 3rd of a sudden cardiac arrest at age 72. A resident of Santa Barbara for over three decades, a noted decorator, and contributor to local causes, Carl supported equality, diversity, and GLBA’s student scholarship endeavors for many years. Carl was hugely generous in his lifetime. He raised and schooled many young people. Carl’s family and friends are happy to see the Adelhardt name associated with a scholarship that will keep on giving in perpetuity.
  2. The Stephen Logan Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund
This scholarship is named for the well-known Santa Barbara contractor whose generous bequest upon his death in 2000 ensured grants would be available to help gay and lesbian youth in the future.
  3. The Raffin-Gathercole Scholarship Endowment Fund
Claude Raffin and Jon Gathercole have provided exceptional ongoing support for GLBA and this endowment, started in 2003, is dedicated to help LGBT youth succeed and achieve academically.
  4. The Robert L. Johns Vocational Scholarship Endowment Fund
This endowment, named for Robert Johns in 2003, a prominent local cosmetologist and businessman, is dedicated to helping ensure vocational students have opportunities to succeed in professional goals.

Donations may be directed to any of the GLBA endowments or individuals may perpetuate their commitment and memorialize a loved one through the GLBA Scholarship Endowment Program. Contributions and gifts are deductible for income tax purposes. Contact one of our GLBA Board of directors for more information.

Donations to the GLBA Student Scholarship Fund are tax deductible under IRS section 501(c)3. In addition to sponsoring student scholarships, GLBA undertakes community projects and produces the Annual GLBA Humanitarian Awards. GLBA has served the greater Santa Barbara community since 1983.
